7 Types of Misspellings 7 Types of Misspellings 7 Types of Misspellings By Mark Nichol Most misspellings can be categorized in one of seven groups. Here are some examples for each of those types. 1. Incorrectly Repeated Consonants In some words, consonants are awarded extraneous twins, such as a doubling of the first t in commitment or of the r in harass (the latter perhaps from confusion with embarrass, in which r is doubled. Other common erroneous doublings including the n in inoculate (perhaps because of innovation and other words in which n is doubled), the s in occasion (many words, like expression, do have a double s), and the c in recommend. Note that in many of these words, there’s already a twin double consonant, which may also confuse writers. (One word that does have two twin consonant pairs, accommodate, is often misspelled with only one m.) 2. Wrong Vowel Using an incorrect vowel is a common problem, leading to such misspellings as definately (or the bizarre variant definatly), dependant, privelege, rediculous (a heretofore virtually unknown mistake, prompted by emphatic pronunciation of the first syllable, that has gone viral as more people are exposed to it online), and seperate. The correct spellings are definitely, dependent, privilege, ridiculous, and separate. 3. Wrong Consonant This type of error is less common than those of the vowel variety, but two of the most commonly misspelled words in this category are consensus (in which the first s is replaced with a c) and supersede (in which the second s is replaced with a c). 4. Reversed Order of Double Vowels Many words with two consecutive vowels, especially those with a pairing of e and i, look odd no matter which order the vowels appear in, so for many writers, it’s a toss-up as to which is correct. These words are all spelled correctly: gauge, niece, pharaoh, receive, weird. 5. Extra Letters One word that is often given an extra vowel is mischievous, perhaps because it is often mispronounced as if it were spelled mischievious. Some words ending in -ly, such as publicly, are often erroneously given an -ally ending. Judgment and acknowledgment, spelled in British English (and, well into the twentieth century in the United States) with an e after the g, omit the e in American English. 6. Missing Letters Coolly and woolly are often misspelled with only one l. Incidentally and other words with the -ally ending, in a reversal of the problem commonly seen with misspelling of publicly and the like, are frequently mistakenly spelled with -ly endings. Liaison often lacks its second i, prerogative is sometimes seen without the first r, and rhythm may lack the first h. 7. Confusion with a Similar Word The most common type of misspelling, perhaps, is that in which the wrong word in a homophonic duo or trio is employed, such as forward in place of foreword or site (or, rarely, sight) instead of cite. Journey of a Man - Essay Example Moreover, I was greatly intrigued by the way physical features of different groups evolved, and flattered that the male sex chromosome played an important part in this research. However, some of Wells’s sayings seemed contradictory to his views. Moreover, I did not like the way the host acted sometimes while conducting the research. Therefore, after watching this documentary, I had mixed opinions about it. During the beginning of the documentary, an explanation is given on Wells’s theory that the birthplace of all humans alive on this planet is the same-Africa. The pride I felt in my ethnicity after discovering this was immense. True, I do not completely associate myself with Africa as my nationality is ‘American’, but I am after all an ‘African American’. This realization also instilled a sense of shame in me due to not having even a bit of patriotism in me for the country where we African Americans are originally from; early in Americaâ€℠¢s history, Africans were brought to America from Africa as slaves but were later given freedom and equality, due to which we are now African Americans. This documentary has made me accept the fact that it does not matter which country I was born in or which country’s nationality I assume. What really matters is that all African Americans know that their great great grandfathers directly originated from Africa, but majority of them forget about this origin. I myself had forgotten this origin until I watched this documentary. This is not the only reason why I am so grateful to this documentary. Thanks to the ground-breaking discoveries made by Spencer Wells, one develops a new perspective of the concept of race. By stating that â€Å"we are all African under the skin†, Wells’s disregards all the old-fashioned concepts of race, such as thinking that people with the same color of skin or language are the same. Spencer puts this point across by exploring how African s migrated to different parts of the world and evolved in different ways, which is why people with similar physical characteristics started to associate themselves with one of these ‘different races’. The documentary disagrees with such associations and I highly agree with this point. I believe that by seeing an individual through ‘racial lenses’, assumptions about that individual would definitely be made according to his/her ‘race’. According to me, this is termed as a kind of discrimination. Being an African American, I myself have been a victim of having assumptions being made about me, such as the time when a grocery owner kept a watchful eye on me while I was buying groceries (just because majority of the shoplifters in that neighborhood are African American). Therefore I really approved of Wells’s opinion that everyone is the same, and not part of ‘different races’. As he says in his documentary, we have the same desce ndant, who was from Africa. However, something about this statement of his made me doubt his personal opinions a bit. By terming us all as ‘Africans’, Wells is in fact calling us a race-something which is contradictory to what his views throughout the documentary are. Semesters to Trimesters Essay At the high school level trimesters are more effective than semesters. So why do most high schools use a semester four quarter system rather than a trimester system? The teachers seemed to be the most concerned about this at Pineview High School, and they are trying to make the switch. The reason that trimesters are more effective is that it allows more time to the class period so teachers can get into detail about the topic. With a four quarter semester system, the classes are short and there are two more classes in one school day. This argument occurs all over the place where high schools are trying to switch from semesters to trimesters. Currently Pineview High, in Chewelah is using a semester system with quarter terms and is trying to change the system to trimesters, in which a block schedule would then be used. The good side to this would be that it would change a forty-five minute class to a seventy minute class. This would allow the teachers plenty of time to go in depth on a topic and plenty of time to fully explain. The lengthening of classes would mean that classes would be cut so instead of seven periods the students would have five blocked periods. In a short class period teachers have a hard time getting the attention of the students and then when they finally do the class is over. Then they have to start all over again. With longer class periods it would allow the teacher to get the attention of the student and then have their attention for a longer period of time. Trimesters seem to be better than semesters and the switch would be rather appropriate because of these reasonings. After researching this topic, I found that the changing of semesters to trimesters is happening all over the USA. So this would show that maybe trimesters are a little more effective than semesters. I researched that a high school in Portland had recently changed systems and that it took about five years of discussion before the change was made. The article stated That the teachers and administrators thought the new schedule would reduce the assembly-line feel of the current school day. In the event students shuttle from class to class, absorbing disconnected lessons in history,  foreign language, literature, math, and science.(The Oregonian) This would be a good thing and be more effective for the students. At this school instead of two, eighteen week semesters, the school year would be split into three twelve week trimesters. Another article stated how the change would allow students to earn more credits. The problem with most districts is that some teachers and administrators do not want to change the system. In the research studied I found that some teachers argued the idea, saying that other schedules provide less class time and make it harder for students to retain what they learn.(The Oregonian) People do disagree with this but in reality more and more school districts are switching to trimesters to benefit students. All of this shows why trimesters are better than semesters, and if a school district is thinking about switching systems then it would appropriate to do so because it is proven to be more effective. If a school district is concerned about the academics of the students then it would be smart to switch systems as well. It will ensure that the students will get the best out of their education and that is what is most important.

Going Back to the Basics Education is a very sensitive topic to discuss among adults. Many adults want the education to be based on a system of ideas that is progressive (which is a system high in the aspect of individuality), some want perennialism (which is the teaching of philosophies that have stood the test of time over hundreds of years), and some, like myself, want to take it back to the way it used to be (essentialism). Education as defined by Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary is â€Å"the action or process of education or being educated.† I believe that the way education was presented in the past worked well and that education should remain to be taught the same. For education to be taught the same as it were in the past, many things have to change. There are too many electives being taught in public schools today, there is too much acceptance on certain things like tardiness, absences, and behavior, there are not severe enough punishments for students who break the rules, and the curricula is too easy. To chance this we need to put a strong work ethic into the children and to do that you need a tough and challenging schedule throughout the schooling process. As a physical educator I would do this by not just rolling out a ball and telling the students to â€Å"play†, but by teaching them certain skills it takes to become a physically fit person. In making a person physically fit, you need to teach them the factors of being fit like: how to eat a healthy diet, how to exercise properly, proper hygiene, and how much sleep to get. I think that the only thing that you get out of education, is what you put in it. To become a smart, balanced, and intelligent person you must put forth all effort in getting an education. To the layperson, education is merely something that needs to be done to get through life and â€Å"to get a good job†, but to me education is making yourself into a better person, and a person who knows what they want out of life. I believe that you need not learn all this extra curricula that is being taught in many of today’s schools like philosophy of ideas, mythology, media, and classes like the printing press. Parker and Nichols in Las Vegas

Parker woke to the sharp sound of his phone ringing. â€Å"Hey are you up because you have to drop your sister to the airport' his dad's voice sounded harsh through the receiver. Parker glanced at his alarm. â€Å"Oh my God!† he yelled, â€Å"it is 11.15, everyone get up now!† He quickly jumped out of bed, ran into the shower and half an hour later, everyone toppled into the car. â€Å"Mum's right,† groaned Natalia â€Å"you are a waste of time, both of you!† â€Å"Shut up!† commented an annoyed Parker, â€Å"We will be there on time. It's not that far.† Natalia hurried through customs and her brothers waved her off. They watched her plane take off and gasped in horror. On the side of the plane was written, ‘Las Vegas'! Nichols shook Parker's shoulder. â€Å"Oh my God!† he yelled, ‘we have sent her on the wrong plane!† â€Å"What shall we do?† cried Parker shaking in disbelief. â€Å"Ok, calm down and breathe,† soothed Nichols, â€Å"I am sure that the air hostess will have checked her ticket and sent her back† They waited for a further ten minutes and then with no more patience, marched up to the departure desk. â€Å"Excuse me, Ma'am,† asked Nichols politely, â€Å"we have sent our sister on the wrong plane. Has she got off yet?† After three hours Parker and Nichols were climbing the walls in desperation. As they worriedly checked their watch, the air hostess came hurrying over and said, â€Å"Your seats are ready. You have been booked and the plane is leaving in ten minutes.† The boys sighed in relief; they would have to follow their sister hoping she would be waiting at MC Carran International Airport, in Vegas. The flight was long and tiring and both boys could not rest because of their worries. All they could do was worry about Natalia and wait for the plane to land. The pilot announced, â€Å"We have now landed at MC Carran International Airport. I hope you enjoyed your flight.† For a split second Parker and Nichols smiled at the pilot's ironic statement. Their humour vanished as they entered the airport and remembered their sister. They caught sight of her exiting the building through a door and ran after her yelling her name. Natalia not hearing the two, jumped into a nearby cab. â€Å"Why is she not listening?† yelled Parker, â€Å"Why is she getting into a cab? Does she not realise she is in Vegas?† They hailed the next cab and Nichols shouted â€Å"Follow that cab. Ha-ha I always wanted to say that.† As the confused driver stared at them, Parker and Nichols collapsed into laughter. Natalia arrived at ‘Loews Lake Las Vegas,' a five star resort. The gobsmacked brothers caught her just as she entered the suite. â€Å"Why the hell are you ignoring us? Could you not hear? We have been chasing you for ages!† shouted Nichols. â€Å"I couldn't hear you!† protested the young girl, â€Å"How was I supposed to know you were here. Besides, I am old enough to be on my own. I don't need you two!† Parker looked at Nichols and burst out laughing. â€Å"YOU don't need US?† they mocked, â€Å"You are still a little girl yet.† Natalia blushed red but said nothing. The suite was beautiful. It had a view of an artificial lake and sunny skies. Light reflected on the glass table. Bright orange sofas matched the painting on the wall. The children had never seen anything so fascinating and their faces reflected their happiness. â€Å"Wow,† exclaimed Parker â€Å"How could you afford this suite?† â€Å"Erm I borrowed Mum's credit card† said Natalia quietly. Parker grinned and pointed out, â€Å"You are going to be in so much trouble, once this is over.† The next hour was spent inquiring about the quickest flight home. Luckily they managed cancelations for the next day. â€Å"Well, while we are here we may as well have some fun tonight † laughed Parker † Come on, everyone, we are in LAS VEGAS!† Nichols gleefully agreed with his brother and just as they were leaving, Nichols ordered Natalia, â€Å"Stay here till we get back. We won't be long.† â€Å"But why can't I come too?† moaned Natalia â€Å"Because you are too young and we might lose you again. Now stay here and be good† said Parker They quickly left a sulking Natalia at the hotel and waited for a cab outside. As they stood, the brothers noticed a red-faced angry looking man staring at them. They realised that he was the same man who they had sat next to on the plane. He spoke harshly, â€Å"How dare you steal my briefcase. Who do you think you are?† As the boys confusedly denied this accusation, the man showed them a bag that read ‘property of Parker Jones.' The boys realised that, on the plane the bags must have accidently been switched. However they had no time to explain as the man pulled up his sleeves and clenched his fists tightly. Parker and Nichols screamed and in a panic, ran down a deserted street yelling for their lives. Unfortunately the furious man was stronger and faster than either of them. Catching up to the two, he punched them in the head knocking them out. Parker and Nichols saw stars and then everything went black. Parker opened his eyes. He was lying on a sticky brownish floor covered in filthy dark stains. A foul odour overpowered Parker's nose and he wretched repeatedly. The broken door had been gnawed away at by the rats. â€Å"Where do you think we are?† asked Nichols worriedly. Parker shook his head. ‘I don't know. I just hope to God that we can get out of here† They both hesitantly peered out of the door into another room similar to the one they had woken up in. Nichols observed a man standing near a small wooden table. â€Å"Hey, that is Mr. Andrew Stevenson.† The two gasped in horror and scuttled back inside. They knew they would have to escape somehow, so shaking with fright; they tried to slowly peer out again. Four men were all busy opening a bag, the same that had been switched earlier. The place was smelly and dirty but the men were more interested in the black bag. As they forced it open, a huge pile of fifty dollar notes popped out. â€Å"We stole this money good and proper† smirked one of the men. â€Å"Perfect plan don't you think?† In shock Parker and Nichols tiptoed out of the building and ran as fast as they could to get help. They explained the whole story to a detective and the police frantically stormed the building handcuffing the men. â€Å"Phew I am glad that is over† said Parker in relief. As he was speaking the detective came up to them and smiled. â€Å"Congratulations boys, you have done a good job. It turned out that the men were on the FBI's most wanted list! As a sign of our gratitude we are awarding you with 10,000 dollars! The boys whooped shouting ‘Viva Las Vegas!'
